our rustic nautical nursery makeover

When we ripped this room down to the studs to build and design Chase’s monochrome room in 2019, it turned out to be the nicest and my most favorite room in the house. I LOVED how it came out and absolutely cherish all the before and after pictures we have to remember how special and memorable it was. Check out the whole process here.

Once we found out we were having another boy, I had to dig deep into how I wanted to turn Chase’s black and white nursery into our new little guy’s room. I knew that if we had a girl, I would go for the monstera plant + flamingo route (because that’s about as much pink I can do) but now I needed a completely new theme that matched our vibe.

It didn’t take too long for me to decide on a nautical theme, but I didn’t want it to be whales and fish and the “typical” baby boy room. I didn’t want light blues or the cookie cutter all-in-one-bedroom-kit that I could buy off the shelf of Buy Buy Baby. I prefer to Tetris the room’s pieces together to make a blend of patterns, textures, and colors and wanted various styles of natural wood or other elements mixed in with dark blues, white, and not-so-soft details.

And so, the rustic nautical came to be… and I LOVE how it all came together. Goose says that it feels so calm in there so I’m hoping this baby’s personality picks up on the vibe ;)

I started picking up different items for the room over the course of the summer and fall 2021 and it all finally came together mid-February 2022 after we moved Chase’s room upstairs. Some of the hardware had to be swapped out from black to white (ceiling fan, curtain rods, picture frames) but we were able to utilize all the black details in Chase’s big boy room where we kept the monochrome/black and white theme.

The rest of the process was pretty smooth. Goose would probably disagree as he hand built a platform (from spare lumber we had laying around) for the crib to elevate the mattress as the hand me down crib we received didn’t have that feature.

One detail we have yet to add is a large print over the crib but that will eventually come down the road!
